Astragalus: a traditional Chinese medicinal herb, has been studied for its potential benefits in supporting lung health. According to a study published in the “Journal of Ethnopharmacology,” Astragalus membranaceus demonstrated significant anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting properties, which can be beneficial in managing chronic respiratory conditions such as asthma and bronchitis (Li et al., 2018). Additionally, a reference from the book “Chinese Herbal Medicine: Materia Medica” by Dan Bensky highlights Astragalus’s role in enhancing lung function and protecting against respiratory infections. Astragalus typically grows in temperate regions, especially in the northern and eastern parts of China, Mongolia, and Korea, thriving in well-drained, sandy soils.

Vitamin C: also known as ascorbic acid, plays a crucial role in supporting immune health. A study published in the journal “Nutrients” in 2017 highlighted that Vitamin C contributes to immune defense by supporting various cellular functions of both the innate and adaptive immune systems. It has been shown to enhance the production and function of white blood cells, which are vital for fighting infections. Additionally, Vitamin C acts as a potent antioxidant, protecting cells from damage caused by free radicals. Notably, a reference to this can be found in the article “Vitamin C and Immune Function” by Carr and Maggini (Nutrients, 2017). Vitamin C is naturally abundant in various fruits and vegetables, with high concentrations found in citrus fruits like oranges, lemons, and grapefruits, as well as in strawberries, bell peppers, broccoli, and spinach.

Echinacea: a genus of herbaceous flowering plants in the daisy family, has been extensively studied for its immune-boosting properties. One notable study published in the journal “Phytomedicine” found that Echinacea extracts can reduce the duration and severity of the common cold by enhancing the body’s immune response (Shah et al., 2007). The study demonstrated that participants who took Echinacea experienced fewer cold symptoms and shorter illness durations compared to the placebo group. Echinacea is primarily grown in North America, with species like Echinacea purpurea, Echinacea angustifolia, and Echinacea pallida being cultivated in prairies and open woodlands across the United States and Canada. This herb has been traditionally used by Native Americans and continues to be a popular natural remedy for mild infections and respiratory conditions. Reference: Shah, S. A., Sander, S., White, C. M., Rinaldi, M., & Coleman, C. I. (2007). Evaluation of echinacea for the prevention and treatment of the common cold: a meta-analysis. *The Lancet Infectious Diseases, 7*(7), 473-480.

Ginkgo Biloba: a plant native to China, has been traditionally used in herbal medicine and is now cultivated worldwide. A reference to its benefits can be found in the book “Herbal Medicine: Biomolecular and Clinical Aspects” by Benzie and Wachtel-Galor, which discusses its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. A study published in the “Journal of Ethnopharmacology” (2017) by Zhang et al. explored Ginkgo’s effects on lung health, demonstrating that its extracts can reduce inflammation and oxidative stress in lung tissues. Ginkgo trees are resilient and can thrive in various environments, often seen in urban settings due to their resistance to pollution and pests.

Milk Thistle: a study published in the journal “Phytotherapy Research” in 2017 investigated the hepatoprotective effects of Milk Thistle (Silybum marianum) and found that its active compound, silymarin, significantly improved liver function in patients with liver diseases. The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial demonstrated that silymarin reduced liver enzyme levels and improved overall liver health markers. Researchers concluded that Milk Thistle could be a beneficial supplement for individuals suffering from liver conditions. (Reference: Loguercio, C., & Festi, D. (2017). Licorice Root: aka (Glycyrrhiza glabra) has been traditionally used in various cultures for its potential benefits in respiratory health. According to a review published in the journal “Phytotherapy Research” (2015), licorice root contains compounds such as glycyrrhizin and liquiritin, which exhibit anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and antimicrobial properties that may alleviate symptoms of respiratory conditions like asthma and bronchitis. A study published in the “Journal of Ethnopharmacology” (2018) demonstrated that licorice root extract significantly reduced inflammation and mucus secretion in animal models with induced respiratory conditions, suggesting its potential therapeutic role in managing respiratory ailments. Licorice root is native to Southern Europe and parts of Asia, including countries like China, India, and Iran, where it thrives in well-drained soils under full sun.

Lobelia: particularly Lobelia inflata, has been traditionally used for its potential benefits in supporting lung and respiratory health. A study published in the “Journal of Ethnopharmacology” in 2010 highlighted Lobelia’s bronchodilator properties, which can help ease breathing in conditions like asthma and bronchitis. Additionally, the herb contains lobeline, an alkaloid that may act as an expectorant, assisting in the clearing of mucus from the respiratory tract. Lobelia naturally grows in North America, thriving in moist, open areas such as fields and along riverbanks. For further reading, “The Complete Herbal Tutor” by Anne McIntyre provides an in-depth look at Lobelia’s medicinal applications and historical uses.

Mullein: (Verbascum thapsus), a plant native to Europe, Asia, and North Africa, has been traditionally used for its respiratory health benefits. A study published in the “Journal of Ethnopharmacology” in 2002 found that extracts of mullein exhibited significant anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties, which can help lessen symptoms of respiratory conditions such as bronchitis and asthma. Additionally, a review in “Phytotherapy Research” highlights the demulcent and expectorant effects of mullein, making it beneficial for soothing irritated respiratory tracts and facilitating mucus clearance. Today, mullein can be found growing in temperate climates worldwide, often thriving in disturbed soils and sunny locations.

Pau d’Arco: derived from the inner bark of the Tabebuia tree native to the Amazon rainforest and other tropical regions of South and Central America, has been traditionally used for its medicinal properties. A reference from the book “Herbal Medicine: Biomolecular and Clinical Aspects” (2nd edition, 2011) highlights its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial benefits, which may be beneficial for respiratory conditions. Additionally, a study published in the “Journal of Ethnopharmacology” (2013) investigated the effects of Pau d’Arco extract on lung health, demonstrating its potential to reduce inflammation and oxidative stress in lung tissue. This makes Pau d’Arco a promising natural remedy for supporting lung health.

Pleurisy Root: also known as Asclepias tuberosa, has been traditionally used for its medicinal properties, particularly for respiratory conditions. According to a reference from the book “Medicinal Plants of North America” by Jim Meuninck, Pleurisy Root acts as an expectorant, helping to clear mucus from the lungs and reduce symptoms of bronchitis and pleurisy. A study published in the “Journal of Ethnopharmacology” (2010) supports these claims, indicating that the root contains compounds that can reduce inflammation and improve lung function. Pleurisy Root is native to North America and typically grows in well-drained soils in prairies, open woods, and along roadsides. Its bright orange flowers make it easily recognizable during its blooming season.

Suma: (Pfaffia paniculata) is a South American herb traditionally used in folk medicine for its adaptogenic properties. It grows predominantly in the Amazon rainforest and other tropical regions of Brazil. A reference to its benefits can be found in “The Healing Power of Rainforest Herbs” by Leslie Taylor, which highlights its use in enhancing overall vitality and immune function. A study published in the “Journal of Ethnopharmacology” (2003) by Oliveira et al. investigated the effects of Suma root extract on respiratory health, noting its potential to reduce inflammation and support lung function due to its rich content of saponins and other bioactive compounds.

“I smoked cigarettes for 25 years and developed bronchitis. After quitting, I started taking Lung Plus to clear my lungs and improve my breathing. Within 7 to 14 days, I noticed a difference, so I kept using it, and after 90 days, the improvement was significant. I also used it during colds, and it greatly shortened their duration. So, 22 years later, I continue to use Lung Plus so I can breathe better!” Pamela
